Emily Browning

Born 7 December 1988 Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Emily has 2 younger brothers, Nicolas & Matthew.

Emily's first audition, when she was 8, was for the role of Opal Ritchie in the Australian tv movie The Echo of Thunder.

In 2002 Emily won an AFI Young Actor's Award for her work on Halifax f.p: Playing God.

Emily on becoming an actor:
"I got serious about acting when I was eight. We did lots of plays and skits at school and one particular skit we did in Year 3 was 'Hey Hey It's Saturday' (a well know Australian variety show) in which I played Jo Beth Taylor. I had a blonde wig on and was acting all ditzy. My friend's dad, who is an actor, saw me in this performance and thought I was talented enough to pursue a career in acting. He asked me to do an audition for a film with famous Australia actress Judy David ('The Echo of Thunder'), so I did and I got the part. I got an agent after that, Catherine Poulton, who I'm still with now. She's responsible for getting all my auditions and is fantastic. Before I was eight I had never thought about acting. I'd never even had any acting lessons. I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was little and I still kind of do. It's something I would love to do but for now I definitely want to keep acting."

Emily on her favourite roles:
"My part in 'Halifax f.p', for which I won an AFI award for Best Young Actor in 2002, has been my favourite so far because I like playing juicy roles. But my biggest highlight was meeting Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom during the filming of 'Ned Kelly'. They were both really, really nice; but Orlando is my favourite."

Emily on landing the part in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events:
"My next big role is in a film alongside Jim Carrey. I got the part after flying to Los Angeles to attend a press junket for the film 'Ghost Ship'. I signed on with a manager while I was there and he sent me home with a whole lot of movie scripts to look over. I put a few auditions on tape and one of them was for the part of Violet in the new Jim Carrey movie. The director saw my tape and asked me to fly over to LA to meet with him and do a second audition. A few weeks later I got a call to say I'd got the part."

Emily on who she admires:
"There's lots of people in the industry that I admire and look up to, especially Cate Blanchett and Nicole kidman because they're Aussies and they're doing really well in the US. I guess, in a way, I aspire to have careers like theirs."

Blue Heelers star Caroline Craig talking of Emily:
"Emily's amazing to work with. She's just so natural and truthful with her acting and is wonderful to watch. I think she's going to be a big star one day."

Emily on the worst part of acting:
"Probably getting up early and if you have a really uncomfortable costume.... in 'Ghost Ship' I had to do underwater stuff, which was a bit uncomfortable with a big dress on with weights on so it wouldn't come up over my head, which was great. And really thick make-up. And I had to learn how to scuba dive for that. I was underwater for long periods of time sharing someone else's pack thing."
