Justine
Clark
Born in 1971
Justine is a gifted
jazz singer who regularly headlines on the Sydney club circuit.
After leaving 'Home
& Away' roles in mini-series such as Come in Spinner, Golden Fiddles
and Tracks of Glory ensued until Clarke decided to take time-out to study
her chosen profession.
Justine has worked
extensively with the Sydney Theatre Company performing lead roles in productions
such as The Man with Five Children, Trelawney of the Wells, Cyrano de
Bergerac, The Herbal Bed and Stiffs, and the MTC production of Trelawney
Of The Wells.
In 1991, a stage
musical of Home and Away toured the UK, which starred Sharyn Hodgson,
Julian McMahon, Justine Clarke, Mouche Phillips and Adam Willits.
In 1991, Australian
actresses Loene Carmen and Justine Clarke got together to write some Dolly
Parton-inspired songs. They later roped in 3 friends: Kym Wilson, Toni
Allayialis and Miss Monica to form the quintet known as the Honky Tonk
Angels. The band continued for 3 or so years.
Justine Clarke is
a member of the band Automatic Cherry.
In 1988 Justine was
nominated for the Best Juvenile Actress-Penguin Awards.
Justine on her career:
"I have been acting professionally since I was seven. Some people
came down to my school to find children for a TV commercial, they liked
my smile. They suggested to my mother that she put me in a kids modelling
agency, she did. That commercial was never made but a lot of others were.
When I was eleven I auditioned for 'The Sound of Music' and had a wonderful
time playing 'Brigitta', one of the Von Trapp children. I went on to make
films and kids television series which led to a regular role in 'Home
and Away' in my late teens and many more roles in mini-series until my
early twenties. I then decided to go to drama school to learn the craft
of acting in the theatre. Since then I have concentrated on theatre roles
and when I'm not treading the boards I like to sing Jazz around Sydney.
I grew up watching Play School and loved it. So the first time I stepped
onto that set I felt like I was a child again and I had climbed into the
television! I remember feeling slightly nervous about meeting old pros
like Jemima and Big Ted but they were very warm and welcoming and just
the same as they are on the show. The best part about being on Play School
is singing songs and making the craft and telling stories, dancing, going
on adventures with the toys, guessing which window it will be, playing
games with Jay or Rhys or Andrew or Mark ~ hang on it's all the best."
Danny Deckchair writer/director
Jeff Balsmeyer on Justine:
Justine is just spectacular. The character she plays is great fun
but every time the camera rolled Justine did something completely unexpected
that was always fantastic and always very funny.
Justine on Danny Deckchair:
I think Jeff wrote a really great character in Trudy or Trudee
as her number plate says. She leapt off the page and screamed out at me!
She really was a joy. Trudy has probably had her horoscope worked out
and decided that a career is a really good option for her. Shes
found ambition a little later in life and boy is she loving every minute
of it! Shes popular and shes hard-working and by God shes
always right! I did a bit of research and met quite a few Trudys
in the real estate world. Because shes bold and she does what makes
her feel good all the time, she doesnt really think about the consequences
or the effect on Danny, from whom shes really growing apart.
She was quite something really and just so much fun to play
I had a ball.
Danny Deckchair producer
Andrew Mason on Justine:
Justine is well-known as a theatre and cabaret performer but she
hasnt done a huge amount of film work before this. I know shell
make a big impact on both Australian and international cinema audiences.
Justine on her Japanese
Story character Jane:
"Sandy's (Toni Collette) disorganised and doesn't look after herself,
but Jane's the opposite. Jane's quite stable - pays her bills on time,
never runs out of petrol and probably finds her friend exasperating but,
at the same time, kind of loves her."
Justine on Play School:
"It's a great job but it's hard work. It is supposed to look off
the cuff, but you have to stick quite closely to the script ... I think
you may have to be an actor to do it. They will often ask me to do the
make - say, make a gecko out of fabric or whatever - because I'm quite
good at that, and get Simon Burke to do the singing."
Asked if Play School
is harder than straight acting Justine replied:
"Yes, it is, because it's not attached to a narrative or an emotional
journey. And it is very technical but it has to be very natural ... The
hard bit for me is not to get too nervous about getting everything right,
to try to stay relaxed." |
