Breakthrough screen role as Sam Neill's young wife in the thriller Dead Calm (1989)

Nicole won a BAFTA & the big one an oscar for her performance in The Hours.

Nicole on The Blue Room:
"I thought I was doing a small play in an experimental theater, and I couldn't believe the reaction it got, I was so nervous the opening night, and then, once the play started, I thought, 'Just go for it. That's how I started (on stage), when I was 14, but I hadn't done a lot of theater in Australia. I did two plays, and so this was the first time I'd been on the stage in 11 years,"

Spent two weeks in bed after filming of The Portrait of a Lady (1996) diagnosed as suffering from emotional stress.

Sang alongside Robbie Williams in a remake of the duet 'Something Stupid', originally by Frank and Nancy Sinatra.

Had to pull out of starring in Panic Room due to injuring herself in a scene for Moulin Rouge! But she did have play the voice of Jodie Foster's divorced husband's wife in the movie.

As a teenager, she performed regularly at the Philip Street theatre, in Sydney, where she once received a letter of praise and encouragement from the then film student Jane Campion, who would go on to direct the critical and popular success The Piano. She was to star in Jane Campion film In The Cut but her busy schedule involving her role as Producer on the project meant that the part went to Meg Ryan instead.

Kidman on Sandra Bullock:
"Sometimes you work with people that you wouldn't want to hang out with off the set, Sandy and I genuinely enjoyed each other. She just came over recently to see me in the play here in London, just for one night. She came all that way, so she's a really good friend."

Nicole on which women inspired her:
"the feminists. i was raised by a feminist and i grew up reading germaine greer. she provoked a reaction and she was important. so were gloria steinem an betty friedan. if you believe in equality you recognize that the feminists fought a hard battle. it’s great to be able to say “i want to be a mother but i would like to work as well.” still there's no such thing as having it all."

Kidman on Eyes Wide Shut:
"It was far more complex than I thought it was going to be in terms of the duration it was shot for, but also in terms of the characters, and working with my husband, and dealing with the subject matter we were dealing with, It was difficult at times but it was incredibly rewarding and I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

Kidman on playing Virginia Woolf:
"I shot it over a period of five weeks, and it was very intense. I lived in a cottage by myself. I just did my work and, basically, sort of existed as Virginia for that amount of time. I do different things for different films, but for this, that's what was necessary. And it wasn't a choice, in terms of Okay, now I'm gonna really delve into the Method. It was just, She existed in the world, and for me to be able to find her essence means I have to live it. So, I lived it. I was in a different realm, psychologically."

Nicole on which actress she admires:
"Judy Davis who refuses to compromise her art. Sshe’ll do a play in a tiny theatre in sydney or really quirky interesting films. I first saw her in my brilliant career about a young girl who wanted to have a career. people kept trying to break her spirit but she wouldn’t let them. She didn’t want to be defined by who she was married to or what she did she enjoyed her independence. It was great to see her as a 17 year old girl."

Nicole on musicians she admires:
"PJ Harvey and beth orton. the thing that shines through for me are women who are provocative, not for the sake of being provocative but because they actually have something to say. And then there’s madonna who i grew up with and who basically said to every young girl “go on go for it. You can do what you want to do, you can dress how you want to dress. You want to wear a bra out in public? You wear a bra out in public!” i loved madonna. at the time i was a teenager going to clubs and listening to her music. She was our heroine. It’s so great that britney spears is now paying homage to her."

Kidman on seeking out the role of Suzanne in To Die For:
"When [I heard about the Suzanne role in To Die For] I thought, 'I'll never get it--it'll be offered to someone else.' So I called Gus [Van Sant] at home, and he took my call, thank God. I told him I'd seen Drugstore Cowboy, and I really wanted to work with him. I said I was destined to work with him."

Nicole on Australia:
"You are isolated down there in Australia. But that’s what makes Australians fresh. We have that perspective on the world, we’re pragmatic and tremendously multicultural and very outward-looking."
