Andrew Lesnie [Cinematographer]
Born 1956 Australia.
Featured in Sean Astin's short film 'The Long and Short of It' that Sean made during his down time on the LOTR trilogy.
Andrew on the difference between Australian & American crews:
"Aussie filmmakers never had the tools or the budgets of their American counterparts, so improvisation was (and still is) the name of the game. There is generally less politics, which is mainly due to smaller budgets, and no real studio system to speak of."
Andrew on his goal with film-making:
"Personally, I hope that an audience will walk out of the cinema wiser than when they walked in, feel that the film was a worthwhile experience and perhaps a bit more compassionate, more forgiving and less judgmental in their everyday lives."
Andrew on LOTR:
"Everyone involved in the project came together for two reasons: Tolkien and Jackson. People were attracted by JRR Tolkien’s classic story of loyalty, friendship and courage, and by Peter Jackson’s commitment to doing it justice."
Andrew talking about work on the LOTR:
"Most of the major sets were pre-rigged from plans designed by the chief lighting technician Brian Bansgrove and myself, and all of the operators and gaffers stayed in regular contact. Many mornings I had a phone in one hand and a meter in the other."
Andrew's advice for people wanting to get into the industry:
"I've got one piece of advice which I heard from Freddy Young many years ago which is for young cinematographers which is stay healthy & the other is I think sort of be critical of the sort of stories that u tell & what they have to say to the audience." |
